Four Sharjah Government Communication Award Invites...

Registration for the fourth edition of the Sharjah Government Communication Award (GCA) is now open. In a bid to enhance cooperation between media organisations and government entities in the UAE, Sharjah Media Centre has invited submissions from journalists and media professionals for the high-profile Award. Entries from members of the press can be submitted under a new award category - Best Press Report/Feature. The opening date for all submissions for the GCA is October 1, 2016 while the last date is January 20, 2017.

Commenting on the introduction of new category, Tariq Saeed Allay, Director of Sharjah Media Centre, emphasised that through its numerous initiatives, SMC seeks to interact with various media bodies out of its belief in their vital role and in the importance of integrating roles of media and government institutions. He said: The qualitative developments witnessed by the Sharjah Government Communication Award, including the expansion of its categories, commensurate with the great role played by media organisations. This helps establish the concept of modern government communication, which aims to strengthen relations and cooperation between the media and government for the service of the community.

The category is dedicated to journalists who actively engage with their sources in government and semi-government entities in the UAE to deliver meaningful and high-impact reportage. The nominated press report should be the result of a positive collaboration between the nominee and his/her source in a government communication department. The source should have provided the journalists with data that helped them prepare their material. The nominated Press Report/Feature has to be in Arabic or in English, and should have been published in 2016. Written in simple language and prepared in a constructive manner to raise public awareness, the report must be easily understood by various age groups and professional segments. It should also provide accurate information substantiated wherever necessary with relevant facts and figures.

Asma Al Juwaied, Manager of Sharjah Government Communication Award, said: In order to make the Government Communication Award more inclusive and engage with more segments of the industry, Sharjah Media Centre has dedicated a whole category in the upcoming edition to journalists and media professionals. With this, we aim to recognise the important role played by local media organisations and publications in highlighting issues of concern before the public, offering solutions based on the most up-to-date and accurate data.

She added: We are confident that the Best Press Report/Feature category will further enrich the GCA and enhance awareness about the award among a wider cross-section of media. Furthermore, it will generate synergies and opportunities for professional collaboration between media organisations and government entities in the UAE. We believe this will help improve the scope and ambit of government communication in the country.
