Creating mobile application technologies which address socio-economic problems was the latest topic debated on a live bi-monthly YouTube programme, YouthConnekt Hangout, which aims to include the youth of Rwanda in advancing the country s socio-economic status.
YouthConnekt Hangout uses Google hangout technology and social media platforms to connect youth to various role models, resources and expertise while exposing them to entrepreneurship and employment opportunities. The initiative was awarded first prize at the 2013 United Nations Development Programme Regional Bureau for Africa Innovation Fair in South Africa.
Introduced by the Ministry of Youth and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in Rwanda, YouthConnekt Hangout joins youth representatives, government, development partners, the private sector and civil society to generate solutions and opportunities for their respective communities.
Minister Nsengimana believes developing mobile technology is crucial in building the ICT sector in Rwanda, which is currently an agriculture-based economy.
Students from the University of Rwanda/Huye and The Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Education of Kibungo in Ngoma District; members of kLab, an open technology development hub in Kigal; as well as other young ICT innovators in Kigali and the Ministry of Youth and ICT headquarters took part in the most recent discussion.
On Tuesday 11 February at 16h00, YouthConnekt Hangout will feature discussions of a competition which requires participants to generate community mobile application technologies.
