2023 Nominees: Order of the Companions of OR TamboDirector-General of The Presidency, Phindile Baleni named the people to be awarded the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo on 28 April 2023.

The Chancellor of the National Orders, Director-General of The Presidency, Phindile Baleni, announced the people who will receive National Orders, including the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo, at an investiture ceremony on Friday, 28 April 2023.

THE NATIONAL ORDERS South Africa has six National Orders:

THE ORDER OF MENDI for Bravery recognises South African citizens for acts of bravery.

THE ORDER OF IKHAMANGA recognises South African citizens who have excelled in arts, culture, literature, music, journalism, and sport.

THE ORDER OF THE BAOBAB recognises South African citizens who have contributed to community service, business and economy, science, medicine, and technological innovation.

THE ORDER OF LUTHULI recognises South African citizens who have contributed to the struggle for democracy, nation-building, building democracy and human rights, justice, and peace, as well as for the resolution of conflict.

THE ORDER OF MAPUNGUBWE recognises South Africans who have accomplished excellence to the benefit of South Africa and beyond.

THE ORDER OF THE COMPANIONS OF OR TAMBO recognises eminent foreign nationals for friendship shown to South Africa. It is, therefore, an Order of peace, cooperation, and active expression of solidarity and support.

The Orders can be awarded in three categories:

Category 1 = Gold

Category 2 = Silver

Category 3 = Bronze.

THIS ORDER The Order of the Companions of OR Tambo is awarded to Heads of State, Government, and other foreign dignitaries. It is awarded for friendship shown to South Africa. Thus an order of peace, cooperation, and active expression of solidarity and support. The Order constitutes an essential pillar of international and multilateral relations.

Named for OR Tambo, who played a role in the growth and development of the international solidarity movement against racism and Apartheid. He established the first Missions of the liberation movement in Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, and London. This was a modest start to bring the friends of South Africa together throughout the world in a continuous and sustained mobilisation of the international community in support of a free and democratic South Africa and against the evils of racism, oppression and Apartheid

The award itself has the following elements:

Walking stick carved out of dark, indigenous wood- is a symbol of appreciation for the support and solidarity shown and a commitment to support and stand by the recipient in return.

Majola the watchful eye with hooks at both the top and bottom symbolises recognition for the active expression of solidarity and support for South Africa.

A tomoye of four sections is inspired by the universal ying and yang that speak of a meeting point for diverse spiritual energies.

THE 2023 ORDER OF the Companions of OR Tambo: BESTOWED IN silver Ms Tracy Chapman (United States of America): For her contribution to the fight for freedom. She participated in efforts to free Nelson Mandela and raising awareness of human rights violations globally.

Ms Christabel Gurney (United Kingdom): For providing steadfast support and friendship to freedom fighters by mobilising international communities and raising awareness of human rights violations globally.

Mr Thomas Oliver Newnham - Posthumous (New Zealand): For his relentless fight against the oppressive apartheid laws. He was instrumental in shaming apartheid South Africa and stopping rugby tours between South Africa and New Zealand.

Mr Peter Tosh (Winston Hubert McIntosh) - Posthumous (Jamaica): For his contribution to the liberation struggle using his musical talent to advance the liberation cause worldwide through incisive and awareness-raising lyrics in his music.

Ms Ruth Weiss (Germany): For her contribution to the liberation struggle. Her prolific writing shone the light on injustices in South Africa. She has been a source of knowledge for other journalists and activists.
