On the 9th of August 1956, an estimated crowd of 20,000 women of different races marched on Union Buildings in Pretoria to deliver petitions to the then-Prime Minister, JG Strijdom, against the carrying of passes by women.
The Prime Minister was not present to receive the petitions and it took another 30 years before the pass laws were repealed. On the attainment of democracy in 1994, that historic day was declared National Womens' Day and has been celebrated and this year sees the 60th anniversary of the turning point in the role of women in the struggle against apartheid.
