Tom Lowe s Mojave Movement Debuts at the G Gallery

Mojave Moonlight, a solo exhibition of nightscapes from fine art photographer and National Park Service Artist-in-Residence Tom Lowe opens July 29th at the G2 Gallery in Venice, California. The exhibition includes 23 photographs depicting iconic Mojave National Preserve locations such as the Cinder Cone Lava Beds and Kelso Dunes, as well as other less famous sites.

An artists reception, featuring Lowe and fellow artists Louie Schwartzberg and Jennifer MaHarry, will be held September 5th.

Appointed a National Park Service Artist-in-Residence in 2013, Lowe previously exhibited Mojave Moonlight at the Desert Light Gallery in Kelso, California with great success. His work has also been featured in F-Stop magazine and earned a Silver Award at the 2014 San Francisco International Photography Exhibition.

Lowe is also a highly-experienced producer of commercials, music videos and feature films. He previously served as executive producer for the commercial production company Great Guns and as head of production at Palomar Pictures. A freelance producer since 2008, Lowe recently produced a series of six Honda commercials with director Fred Savage.

Mojave Moonlight was inspired by Lowe's memories of sleeping under the stars during summer camping trips as a boy. The exhibit includes images of isolated rock formations, desaturated cacti, twirling star-shine patterns and moonlit desert landscapes. Renowned photographer Bob Killen described the images as seductive, decoding ordinary daylight into an extraordinary nighttime tableau.

Over the course of fifteen nights I drove off the pavement, down dirt roads, some barely passable, parking my car just before sunset, says Lowe. I rediscovered the light show in the blanket of the Milky Way-shooting stars and countless satellites accenting all the familiar constellations.

Creating a fine art exhibit for Mojave National Preserve's Artist-in-Residence program requires reflection, introspection, and then interpretation, according to Linda Slater, Chief of Interpretation for the Mojave National Preserve. Artists have to develop a theme from 1.6 million acres of visual communities and millennia of history, says Slater. In Mojave Moonlight, Tom Lowe has used moon and starlight as the main sources of illumination. The resulting collection reflects a mood and aspect of the Mojave that even seasoned desert travelers rarely experience.
