IBC devoted a series of information rich workflow case studies to highlight applications that can save you money and which technologies can aid your creativity. If you missed any, dont worry, you catch up by simply selecting our free to view video presentations online.
Workflow is one of those words that came into the language with file-based editing and also when things started to get complicated, said AmberFin CTO Bruce Devlin in one session. Really, workflow is about how people get their jobs done with technology.
Online will find an a behind the scenes examination of the complex file-based technologies powering BT Sports recent TV channel launches, as well as practical workflows for 4K cinematography with colorist Matt Scott.
The great cinematographers like Roger Deakins didnt just know how to operate a camera but also understood how to to process film, says Scott, introducing his engaging presentation. I feel that that innate knowledge of the medium is being lost and that emerging cinematographers dont realise what they are working with. We are moving into 4K and RAW files with ever greater bit depth and colour, but if you dont know what is possible with what you have captured in post then how can you make decisions on set or in the field?
In another session with the apposite title How To Stop Bleeding Money, Nashville-based filmmaker Bobby Marko explains how a cloud production platform has made his work more efficient and more creative by enabling online collaboration between himself and fellow scriptwriters, producers and editors.
An eye-opening presentation from global financial information network Bloomberg illustrates the depth of the problem facing content owners, as well as an elegant workflow solution.
Media is not a siloed set of processes but a common set of assets across all businesses, explains Roman Mackiewicz, Vice President Broadcast Operations, Bloomberg. Bloomberg outputs 24 hours of live and 60 hours of recorded content a day across a variety of channels. The problem is that we operate in a world where there is a complete and total lack of standards. The current challenge we face are stagnant business workflows and technologies that never address the needs of cross-pollination and cross production. We gather vast amounts of information daily from contributions ranging from full-scale OB trucks to individuals with DSLRs. Our users and customers expect that content to be everywhere, but we have a content processing bottleneck.
Mackiewicz goes on to explain how the bottleneck is being alleviated thanks to the lead Bloomberg has taken in implementing the EBU and AMWA Framework for Interoperable Media Services (FIMS) boosting efficiency and output eight fold over the past year.
FIMS is not just a standard for sake of standard but a core part of our approach to technology and system architecture, he adds.
Software company Limecraft want to lift news journalists and documentary producers back to the art of storytelling and away from being bogged down in incompatible audio visual content creation and office systems.
We want to help them move from research to creating a rough structure to shaping a story and then back again to iterate it as many times as needed, says Head of Product Development, Nico Oorts.
Limecraft explains how in partnership with factual producers at Flemish public broadcaster VRT, it is developing tools to support seamless switching between research and shaping production. We can enable journalists to transcribe content and even selecting quotes, which are the basic elements of documentaries.
The reality is that the industry operates in between traditional broadcast operations and new, file-based workflows. Given the nature and requirements of live broadcast, that is likely to remain the case for many years yet. So how can broadcasters take advantage of IT solutions to simplify and enhance their control and monitoring workflows?
A presentation on software-based multi-device control, led by Roddy Pratt, Technical Director, Rascular, claims to provide the answer.
In live broadcasting the workflow and signal flow used to be the same thing, but IT solutions allow us to separate them, he explains by way of a case study of IT implementation at Greek pay TV platform Nova. We now have a different conceptual model. We can look at how people do things and not how the equipment does it. The computer is in control.
Further sessions focus on day to day operations such as automating Quality Control and planning rapid edit compliance.
