POV Films Nominated for 9 News & Documentary Emmy Awards

POV (Point of View), public televisions premier showcase for independent documentaries, has received nine nominations for the 2013 News & Documentary Emmy Awards, it was announced today by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The POV nominees are: Nostalgia for the Light (two nominations including Best Documentary), The City Dark, Give Up Tomorrow, Granito: How to Nail a Dictator, My Reincarnation, POV | StoryCorps Animated Series, Sound of Vision and POVs 25th anniversary promotional reel. In 2012, POV set a record by winning five News & Documentary Emmy Awards.

This year, PBS received 45 nominations in total. David Fanning, Executive Producer of FRONTLINE, will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The 34th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards, honoring programming distributed during the calendar year 2012, will be presented on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013 at a ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, located in the Time Warner Center in New York City. Emmy Awards will be presented in 42 categories, including Breaking News, Investigative Reporting, Outstanding Interview and Best Documentary, among others.

These nominations reflect the growing importance of documentaries in our world today, said Simon Kilmurry, Executive Producer of POV. As weve seen recently, Granito played a vital part in events unfolding in Guatemala, where a dictator was on trial, and Give Up Tomorrow exposed judicial corruption in the Philippines, where a young man was unjustly accused of murder.

From spiritual journeys such as My Reincarnation to the search for justice in Give Up Tomorrow and Granito to the meaning of the night sky in The City Dark and Nostalgia for the Light, these are films of profound beauty and uncompromising reporting, said Cynthia Lopez, Co-Executive Producer of POV. We are delighted that our short films, including StoryCorps Animated Series and Sound of Vision, which was part of the International Documentary Challenge, are being recognized as well.

POV has previously won 32 Emmy Awards, including a 2007 Special News & Documentary Emmy for Excellence in Television Documentary Filmmaking. POV has garnered a total of 113 Emmy nominations, including a 2011 Primetime Emmy nomination. In addition, POV has won 15 George Foster Peabody Awards, 10 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Broadcast Journalism Awards, three Academy Awards , the Prix Italia, the Webby, two IDA Awards for Best Continuing Series and the National Association of Latino Independent Producers Corporate Commitment to Diversity Award. In 2013, POV was honored with a MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions.
