CBC Podcast, A Brief History of Triangle Sports, Focuses on Road to Legal Sports Betting in NC

The Capitol Broadcasting podcast A Brief History of Triangle Sports returned earlier this week with a new season about the long, contentious road to legal sports betting in North Carolina. The release of the third season of the popular podcast coincided with the start of legal sports betting on March 11, 2024.

This is - and has been - a huge story for North Carolina, said CBC Radio Vice President Brian Grube. After missing passage by a single vote last year, we knew there had to be an interesting backstory to how this all came to fruition.

An anthology podcast, A Brief History of Triangle Sports delves into a different topic each season. The show is available in all podcast apps and on 99.9 The Fan's YouTube channel.

The backstory of how North Carolina became the newest state to allow mobile sports betting is fascinating, said Corp Director of Podcast Operations Anita Normanly. In four episodes we weave together Triangle sports history and the contentious politics around legalized gambling.

This is a story we needed to own given our brand and our unparalleled local news and sports reporting capabilities.

- CBC Radio Vice President Brian Grube The topic was the logical choice for this third edition of the podcast.

I knew we had the people in-house to make it happen, said Grube. This was not an easy project, especially given the tight timeframe we had to deliver in coordination with North Carolina's activation date of 3/11.

WRAL-TV Sports Producer Brian Murphy and 99.9 The Fan Sports Talk HostTim Donnelly co-host with Normanly as executive producer. WRAL-FM Air-Personality Doug Miller is master editor and 99.9 The Fan Radio Sports Producer Graham Hill is in-studio producer.

It's not easy to craft a narrative, documentary-style podcast, but Brian Murphy has covered this story since the beginning, explained Normanly. If anyone could distill their knowledge into a linear story, it was him. When I asked if he was interested in doing a podcast, he came back almost immediately with a story structure and a list of interviewees. Brian and Tim Donnelly as co-hosts bring an energy to the storytelling. Their ad-libbed segments are some of my favorite parts of the series.

She continued, Doug Miller has done a masterful job in mixing the podcast. He has a great ear for taking all the puzzle pieces and making them sound polished and cohesive.

The entire crew complimented each other on the work each did to create the four episodes.

Pulling the pieces together for a multi-episode podcast is a lot easier when you have a great team to funnel the pieces to you, said Miller. Kudos to Anita Normanly for project oversight and Brian Murphy's great content on this one. Aside from that, a perk' of this podcast was learning the extensive backstory of how betting on your favorite sports team came to be in North Carolina. Quite a ride for those involved.

The first episode released on Monday, March 11, with the second on Tuesday, and the third and fourth on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

I'm proud of the work we've done to develop this story as a podcast, said Normanly. This is a great format for future long-form podcast content.

Grube gave a huge shout out to the talented team who put season three of the podcast together.

None of this happens without them; I'm still in awe of the commitment, effort and teamwork displayed by all of them to make this happen, he said. Another proud moment for CBC!
