GULLI: 0 Musical Comedy Cycle

GULLI: 2013 Musical Comedy Cycle Every Sunday at 8:45 pm, starting on 17 November 2013, Gulli viewers will be treated to a musical comedy cycle (in multilingual versions) featuring exceptional directors, multi-talented stars and unforgettable songs in five weeks of great entertainment for the whole family.

Caroline Cochaux, Gullis programming director, commented as follows: "After the success of the Charlie Chaplin cycle in 2012, I wanted to give parents and children another chance to watch television together. We remembered the pleasure we had as children watching musical comedies as a family so we drew up our own list of top 5 musicals in-house. With this cycle, Gulli becomes a vehicle for passing down musical memories by giving parents and children an opportunity to spend special time together. The films comprising the cycle are highly poetic, often funny and joyful, and always full of excitement and heightened emotion, and all of them were remastered in high definition for a truly exceptional entertainment experience!"

The Wizard of Oz

Dorothy, a young orphan, lives on a farm in Kansas with her guardians Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Everything would be much better, if only the dreaded Miss Amira Gulch, did not hate Dorothys dog Toto. All of a sudden, Dorothy is swept away by a tornado, across the rainbow, to the magical kingdom of the Munchkins. In order to find Toto who has disappeared, Dorothy, relentlessly pursued by the Wicked Witch of the West, must seize the bad fairys ruby slippers and find the only person who might be able to help her: the mysterious Wizard of Oz. Dorothy then begins her perilous journey to the Emerald City with three incredible companions: the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion.

The Sound of Music

With the Nazis about to take power in Austria, Maria is preparing to be a nun. Her convent sends her to the family of Captain Georg Ritter von Trapp, a widower and father of seven children, to work as a governess. In the beginning, the children are somewhat hostile towards her, but she stands firm and they warm to her when she teaches them to sing. Meanwhile, the captain is seeing a baroness with the goal of finding a mother for his children. The baroness, however, does not look favourably on Maria and encourages her to leave. But Maria and Georg fall in love. When they return from their honeymoon, they learn that the captain must return to duty in the navy, but he refuses to participate in the war. He attempts to arrange for his familys escape to protect them from retaliation, but the night Maria and the children are set to perform on stage in Salzburg, they are surprised by the Nazis. There is only one solution: try to escape after the performance...

The King and I

In 1862, Anna Leonowens, a young English widow, turns up in Bangkok with her son Louis to become the governess of the seven children of Mongkut, the proud and powerful King of Siam. The monarch claims he wants to give his children a European education and offer the country an enlightened monarchy, worthy of the 19th century. Unfortunately, his authoritarian nature soon brings him into conflict with Anna, who knows what it means to be independent. She nonetheless wins the love of her pupils and the esteem of the king, who is charmed by her perseverance and frankness. But this beautiful understanding is soon disturbed by the Prime Minister who is plotting against the king...

My Fair Lady

While crossing the Covent Garden market, Professor Henry Higgins, a linguistics specialist, is attracted by the vulgar (in his view) Cockney accent and manners of a young flower seller, Eliza Doolittle. He accepts his friend Colonel Pickerings challenge to make the young girl a real "lady" by teaching her proper language and good manners. Attracted by the prospect, Eliza visits the professor who agrees to give her a first lesson... After months of hard work, Eliza is finally ready. She makes her entrance into "society" at a ball and everyone is won over. But the attitude of the professor, who only sees her as a guinea pig in a successful scientific experiment, deeply hurts Eliza, who has fallen in love with him. She decides to run away. During her absence, Higgins realizes what she really means to him. But will Eliza return one day?

A Star is Born

Norman Maine, an aging alcoholic actor, sees immense potential in a young singer named Esther Blodgett. But once Norman has married Esther, now a rising musical comedy star who has changed her name to Vicki Lester, he resents the triumphant rise of his wife to stardom and his own decline. When she wins an Oscar, he joins her on stage and accidentally strikes her during a drunken speech. Eventually, he overhears his wife telling the studio head she intends to give up her career to take care of him...
