The TV drama Gqeberha: The Empire faces allegations of off-screen drama and mistreatment of actors on the set with claims of poor pay, underpayment, inadequate food provision, and subpar living conditions for the cast.

GQEBERHA WORKING CONDITIONS One insider revealed that actors were relocated to Port Elizabeth but were allegedly subjected to subpar living conditions. They had to live in unsatisfactory accommodations. The allegations go further, stating that actors were underpaid and even experienced hunger during their time on set.

The show is about polygamist Luzuko Mxenge, a powerful businessman whose empire deals with issues of family, love, money, power, glory, and respect. Notable actors like Zikhona Sodlaka, Zandile Msutwana, Mbulelo Grootboom, Anele Matoti, Unathi Guma, and Kay Bikitsha form part of the talented cast.

FUNDING PROBLEMS Gqeberha: The Empire,' which was meant to replace the popular show The Queen.' It was initially rumoured to be facing financial problems last year. The budget for the show was reportedly set at R86-million, and it was partially funded by the Eastern Cape government.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY Reports suggest that some cast members have complained about living in squalid conditions. Others had to even find their way from Johannesburg to Gqeberha to take part in what was supposed to be a unique production.

Regarding the allegations of mistreatment and underpayment of actors, Mzansi Magic was quick to address the issue. They stated that they will conduct their own investigation and reach out to the production house to verify the claims.
