Watch: Kruger hyenas taught a lesson after trying to corner a lion [video]

These hyenas at Kruger National Park were not to have the last laugh on this occasion after they picked on somebody twice their size, and with plenty of options to call for back-up.

Sensational footage captured by 19-year-old student Amber Soames shows the moments after a wildebeest was killed, and the predators circled around its dead carcass. At first, things seemed pretty amiable, with the lion's share going to well, the lion.

Lions vs hyenas at Kruger Park But then the hyenas got some ideas above their stations. They attempted to pick a fight with their feline rival, realising that they had numbers on their side. There were at least half-a-dozen of the critters trying to bite the lion's rear and attempting to take a chunk from its legs.

In scenes not witnessed since The Lion King, the cornered predator calls for help from its pride within a minute, we see two other lions dashing to the scene. They pick up the pace and charge towards the once-confident hyenas, scaring them off.

The drama continues as the hunter becomes the hunted: The group of hyenas (well, it's actually a cackle of hyenas, but anyway ) then have to do their best to avoid becoming a meal for the pride, narrowly escaping the pursuit as the lions re-establish the natural balance.

I became excited as the suspense grew, I just knew that some sort of drama was going to unfold and I was so ready for it. For other visitors to the park that are at a sighting like this, the advice I would give is to just have patience and persistence because when there are numerous predators at the same scene, the action of some sort has got to give way.

Amber Soames Will the hyenas learn to stay in their lane next time? Probably not. They saw an advantage and tried to take it. But when the tables turned, they flipped at a tremendous speed. Just stick to wildebeest as your main course from now on, guys.
