Release of Al Jazeera Media Network journalists delayed --

Egyptian authorities continue to hold five Al Jazeera Media Network journalists, despite the fact that the network is operating legally in Egypt.

The decision to release Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr cameraman Mohamed Badr has been delayed for the sixth consecutive month when the court decided to postpone his sentencing until 2 February. The verdict in his case was scheduled to be announced on 9 January.

Abdullah Al Shami from Al Jazeera Arabic has been detained for more than five months and Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed from Al Jazeera English have been in captivity for 12 successive days. They are expected to appear in court on 10 January.

Al Jazeera Media Network demands the immediate and unconditional release of the five arrested journalists and expresses its disappointment with the way the captives are being treated.

Ghassan Abu Hussein, Al Jazeera Media Network official spokesperson, commented: By continuing to hold our journalists, the Egyptian authorities are attempting to silence us and to disable our role as a media organisation. We condemn the allegations directed at our staff by Egyptian authorities which are aiming to stigmatise us, and further incite violence against our journalists working on the ground. This is all part of a larger antagonistic campaign against us.

Al Jazeera Media Network has been subject to significant pressure by the interim Egyptian government since the coup d tat of 3 July 2013 due to the network s coverage of all perspectives on events in Egypt.

Apart from the arrest of journalists, Egyptian authorities have displayed aggressive actions against Al Jazeera Media Network by confiscating equipment and jamming satellite signals.
