A new award young journalist from the developing world is being sponsored by the Thomson Foundation for the UK Foreign Press Association (FPA) Awards.

Journalists under the age of 30 working in countries with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of less than $20,000 will be eligible for the award.

Three finalists will be flown to London, spend two nights in the city and attend the gala award night at the Sheraton Park Hotel on Tuesday 19 November along with a host of other potential award winners and leading figures from the world of journalism.

Showcasing talent We are delighted to be associated with the prestigious FPA Awards, said Thomson Foundation chief executive, Nigel Baker. This will give us an opportunity to showcase the journalistic talent from developing countries and enable one particular individual to be the first recipient of this new award, getting their work recognised by the best in the business.

Each entrant for the award needs to submit a portfolio of three published pieces of work produced in the 12 months preceding the deadline for submissions which is Wednesday 18 September. They can be in any format print, audio, video, multimedia or a combination of all four.

Their work will first be scrutinised by the Foundation the world's longest established international media development organisation and then the FPA judges.

Strong tradition Thomson Foundation has a strong tradition of involvement in competitions for journalists.

The Foundation currently runs an award scheme called the Bangladesh Inquirer Awards which examines submissions on investigations into corruption and financial mismanagement and is judged by a high profile editorial panel from national and international media

Between 2005 and 2011 the Foundation ran the Inquirer Awards which recognised the work of investigative journalists in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Iraq.

Investigations into the use of pesticides in Palestine, rape within families, and the plight of foreign workers in Beirut were among the subjects tackled by the winners of the 2011 scheme.

Journalists who enter will need to submit a written statement of no more than 600 words giving a summary of the content of each story and any impact it had on the public debate in the country of publication.
