Major Updates to Phantom Flex4K Now Available

Vision Research, has just released a major update to the Phantom Flex4K camera platform. First announced at NAB 2015 in Las Vegas, these new features are now available as a free firmware update and include Apple ProRes 422 HQ and audio recording. A new version of Phantom PCC software is also included, and is necessary to take advantage of these new features.

Flex4K & CineStation IV Firmware Update:

Users now have the ability to choose between Cine Raw and ProRes 422 HQ when recording to the Phantom CineMag IV. High-speed 4K recording notoriously results in an extremely large amount of data. A typical one-day shoot will end up with several TBs of raw files. The option to choose the ProRes 422 HQ codec in-camera now provides a high-quality 4K recording alternative that saves significant space and ultimately provides a faster, simplified workflow.

ProRes 422 HQ works at the camera's full resolution of 4096 x 2304 (full 4K 16:9). Frame rates up to 938 fps are supported in Loop' mode, and up to 30 fps in Run/Stop' mode for longer sync-sound takes. When compared to the equivalent Cine Raw, the 4K ProRes HQ file is approximately 2.5X smaller.

When audio is enabled, a stereo AES/EBU signal can be fed into the camera, resulting in uncompressed .wav files saved automatically along with the video, making the Flex4K the first high-speed camera with integrated audio. The .wav files are 48KHz at 24-bit, and are intended for use as a reference or scratch track. Frame rates of 23.976 and above are eligible, though only frame rates that match the video rate can be played back from camera RAM for review.

In addition, there have been several updates to the Flex4K's on-camera control interface including improved functionality and enhancements to navigating key features and functions such as the ability to save to the CineMag IV.

Phantom PCC Software Update (PCC 756)

Vision Research has also released an updated version of its Phantom PCC Software for the Phantom Flex4K. Highlights of the update include:

Enable audio and switch between Cine Raw & ProRes 422 HQ CineMag recording formats.

Preview and download all files over Gb or 10Gb Ethernet.

ACES color space support - convert Flex4K cines into ACES color space by converting them to the open .exr file format new in this version of PCC.

User interface improvements, including advanced controls for grouped / synchronized cameras and the option for a preview image on the timeline while scrubbing through the recording.
