BURBANK, CALIF. - July 18, 2013 - KCETLink, in collaboration with The Johnny Mercer Foundation, will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the classic comedic thriller, Charade, during the KCET Summer Cinema Series at the historic Aero Theatre in Santa Monica on July 23 at 7 p.m.
Each summer, the KCET Summer Cinema Series, presented by The Johnny Mercer Foundation and the E. Hofert Dailey Trust showcase nine weeks of the best new films before their theatrical release, as well as a classic Mercer scored film.
A four-time Academy Award winner, Mercer, along with Henry Mancini, scored Charade in 1963, which stars Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. The films title song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song the following year.
Once again, were pleased to pay homage to Johnny Mercer and this legendary film, said Pete Hammond, renowned film critic and host of the KCET Summer Cinema Series. The dynamic performances, the Parisian backdrop and, of course, the melodic score created a timeless work of art that is beloved by movie lovers near and far.
Directed by Stanley Donen, Charade follows a trio of crooks who relentlessly pursue a young American, played by Hepburn, through Paris in an attempt to recover the fortune her dead husband stole from them. The only person she can trust is Grants suave, mysterious stranger.
The film screening will be followed by a lively Q & A hosted by Hammond. The mission of the Johnny Mercer Foundation (JMF) is to support the discipline of songwriting in the tradition of the Great American Songbook as exemplified by the life and work of Johnny Mercer: the most prolific lyricist, composer, performer, collaborator, and producer of the 20th Century. The Foundation continues Johnnys legacy by partnering with individuals and organizations dedicated to celebrating and nourishing the disciplines he mastered, and the causes he and Ginger Mercer championed. JMF partners with several institutions including: LyricNOTES with the Kaufman Center in New York City; The Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project with Northwestern University (The American Music Theatre Project) to nurture and encourage young talent in the field of songwriting and The Johnny Mercer Collection at Georgia State University, where Johnnys many works and memorabilia are housed. They also support Georgia State University in a fellowship-type program to facilitate music education through the development of an elementary and middle school curriculum that focuses on, but is not limited to, songwriting and the Great American Songbook.
