New Projectors: ZEI secures six planetarium contracts

ZEISS has secured several orders for planeta-

riums over recent weeks. The systems are due to be delivered to customers in Germany, India, the USA, Brazil and Thailand over the course of this year.

Three years ago the Plattsburgh Planetarium in the State of New York was dismantled and put into storage while asbestos removal work was carried out. ZEISS has now been commissioned to reinstall the planetarium projector with a modernized control system and to add a powerdome fulldome system for 360 degree video projection.

In the Thai town of Roi-Et a new planetarium is being constructed for the Science and Cultural Center for Education. ZEISS has been contracted to supply a fully equipped SKYMASTER ZKP 4 planetarium projector. The customers decision to choose ZEISS was based on a recommendation from the planetarium in Rangsit, which has been working successfully with ZEISS technology since 2007.

ZEISS will also be bringing its very latest technology to the local planetarium in the southern Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram, formerly known as Trivandrum. With a dome measuring 17 meters in diameter, it is one of the largest planetariums in India. A ZEISS STARMASTER Starball will replace the planetariums old projector. This will be supplemented by a modern, multi-channel ZEISS fulldome system which will enable star projection to be performed synchronously with fulldome video projection.

Back in the mid-1970s ZEISS equipped the planetarium in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, with a spaceflight planetarium. ZEISS has now secured a contract to supply and install an eight-channel powerdome video system for fulldome projection in the planetarium. The customer decided to continue using its old planetarium projector, which is still working reliably.

The Naval Academy at M rwik in Flensburg will be taking delivery of a SKYMASTER ZKP 4 projector at the end of this year. This will replace a ZKP 2 dating from 1986 and will primarily be used to conduct training in astronomical navigation.

ZEISS is also currently engaged in a very special project to renovate the planetarium at the German Museum in Munich, the location for which the ZEISS projection planetarium was originally developed. Once the building has been completely gutted and overhauled it will be equipped with a new dome and the very latest ZEISS planetarium technology in the form of a SKYMASTER ZKP 4 and VELVET powerdome. The planetarium is scheduled to reopen in the beginning of 2014.
