A Miracle Moment: Damien Leroy s Fall and Rise

There are people in this world who radiate goodness. Who exude positivity. Whose pores seem to sweat happiness. Kite boarder and GoPro athlete Damien Leroy is the king of those people.

In his years with the GoPro family, we have had the opportunity to meet Damien and be inspired by his energy and focus on doing good for others. He is always smiling. Always. And he is always reaching for then next adventure. Always.

In early July, on one of his many adventures near his hometown of Jupiter, Florida, Damien suffered life threatening injuries after falling more than 150 feet out of the sky from his malfunctioning powered paraglider. He is currently recovering from nothing short of a miracle event - a moment when all of the good that he has brought into the world circled back around to return him to earth alive. Call it luck, God or karma. Damien calls it a gift.

We caught up with Damien before his GMA interview to ask him a few questions about his recovery and how this event has changed his perspective on life.

GP: How is your recovery going?

DL: Truly I cant be more pleased with recovery. I met with my amazing doctor yesterday and it was nothing but good news. I have one month of just non weight bearing on my broken left femur. My broken back, punctured lung, pelvis, sacrum and ribs should heal on their own with time. Nothing short of a miracle there. It will still be a long road but I am ready to take it on!

GP: How has this affected both your professional and personal life?

DL: I would have to say this is quite a life changing experience. The fact is I should not be here today from a fall like that. I was given a second chance in life is how I look at it. I know I am here to do great things not for me but for others. I truly believe it. I have a lot more left and am more fired up than ever to inspire and to share the gift of happiness with as many people as I can.

GP: How has the experience adjusted your perspective? Or has it only served to reinforce the beliefs and positive vibes you've always held?

DL: To be honest, you truly realize what's important in life. Your everyday work problems that you thought were so important become very minor in regard to your family and loved ones. The way I looked at life and the way I now look at life I think my priorities have shifted for sure. You are more grateful for the little things.

GP: What one thing has been the most surprising result of the accident?

DL: There is no question the love from around the world. I had no clue this even hit the news and then my phone had over 500 texts and all my social channels blew up with messages of love and prayers! I truly believe everyone's love and prayers are the reason I am here today! My whole life has been meeting amazing people around the world but the love from my nurses, doctors, trauma team, everyone along the way was nothing short of angels working! I am so grateful.
