Carike Keuzenkamp's best children's songs [watch]

We'd like to say Carike Keuzenkamp is synonymous with Afrikaans music but that's not entirely accurate. For many years, Carike was Afrikaans music.

Even if you don't know who she is, chances are good you know one or two of her songs. During the course of her career, Carike released six studio albums and three compilation albums.

Her music career spanned more than three decades and she appeared in a few Afrikaans films too, but Carike is most well known for her children's songs. Who can forget Ek's n Dapper Muis and Daantjie Kat?

The best Carike Keuzenkamp songs If our mothers didn't sing lullabies to us before bedtime, we performed her songs during music class and primary school concerts. I bet you'd still recall the words when you hear her songs.

Heidi

Remember Heidi? The German folktale was initially published in 1884 by Johanna Spyri. Decades before we watched Heidi's adventures on our TV screen, Shirley Temple was cast in the first version of the film back in 1937.

The version we grew up with - Heidi, Girl of the Alps - was actually a Japanese anime series created by Junz Nakajima and Shigehito Takahashi. The 52 episodes eventually made its way to South Afrika where the SAUK dubbed it into Afrikaans.

Die Lappop

Die Lappop, along with Heidi, are two of Carike's oldest songs, first released in the late seventies. I only realised recently that the song shares some valuable lessons about friendship, teamwork, acceptance, and gratitude.

Die Padda Wou Gaan Opsit

A catchy song indeed and it's practically impossible to skip over the ahum, ahum, ahum part without merrily singing along. It tells the story of a frog who wanted to visit his girlfriend but couldn't find an opsit kers. The frog then wanted to take a firefly but that also didn't work out. Ironically, there is an Afrikaans dating site called Opsit Kers .

Die Dapper Muis

We have to admire the confidence of this brave mouse. I mean, he's not scared of anything or anyone, besides of course cats, mouse traps, owls, and a cacophony of loud noises Besides all those things, he's not really scared of anything.

Haas Das se Nuuskas

This list would not be worthy if it didn't include Haas Das se Nuuskas, a weekly television show about a rabbit and mouse running a news broadcast service in Animal Land. The main character was performed by South Africa's most famous anchorman, Riaan Cruywagen.

Other characters included Koning Leeu, Piet Muis, Bakkies Bobbejaan, Oupa Dassie, Spiekeries Springbok, Martin Miskruier and Vlossie Mossie.

Daantjie Kat

Ah, Daantjie jou rakker. Daantjie Kat was used to teach children (and adults) about road safety. He urged kiddos to look both ways before crossing the street, fasten their seatbelts and listen to the traffic cops. But looking at this now, as an adult That cat mask a just a little bit creepy

Pinocchio

Hout kabouter, jy's n stouter. The 1-minute video features a marionette, an assortment of Pinocchio's friends (stuffed animals) and of course, Mister Geppetto.
