Leonardo DiCaprio buys TV rights to Lauren Beukes latest novel

Leonardo DiCaprio's production company will turn bestselling South African writer Lauren Beukes' newest novel about a time-travelling serial killer into a TV series.

The Shining Girls, described on its cover as a tale of A girl who wouldn't die hunting the killer who shouldn't exist, is a story about Depression-era serial killer from Chicago who discovers a way to travel through time. In order to keep time travelling Curtis must kill shining girls, women with great talent and potential. One of his victims survives and tries to bring the killer to justice.

DiCaprio's Appian Way company is cooperating with film and television studio MRC to create the project. While better known for its involvement in such movies as Ted, MRC has also made an impact in TV as they produced Netflix's House of Cards, and HBO's The Ricky Gervais Show and The Life and Times of Tim.

Following the announcement, Beukes wrote on Twitter, Hey, thanks for all the congratulations, I'm pretty freaking stoked, let me tell you (here's where this gets quoted as my official comment).

In April, Beukes told We Love This Book website, I didn't ever specifically set out to write cyberpunk or science fiction or anything else, I'm just writing the stories I'm interested in telling. There will always be an element of the weird about my books in some way, because using crazy, mad conceits as a way of exploring real social issues and themes matters to me.

In 2011, the author was awarded Arthur C Clarke prize for her previous novel Zoo City, film rights to which were acquired by a South African producer.
