When Alistair Klinkenburg set out on his mission to explore the different ways people deal with their head noise-after suffering years of chronic mental health issues himself-he didn't know where it would lead to, but he knew his love of cycling and surfing was a proven formula to help him to get his head straight.
Alaistair has dealt with acute anxiety from a young age following being diagnosed with juvenile arthritis when he was 8, spending 10 years in and out of hospital, sleeping in leg splints, hiding his weekly injections and endless medical appointments. So setting out to cycle a distance of 1,000 miles in two weeks was no easy feat.
The idea was to ride, raise a little money for Black Dog, film a few little interviews with various surf identities I'd met over the years, with the vague theme of things outside of the surf that they do to keep their heads in check'. Just a good excuse for a physical jolly in the name of work,' Alastiar explains about his hopes for the trip.
He set off on his journey with his friend Sam, and captured it all on HERO10 Black, with the aim of cycling from Mullumbimby to Mollymook on the south coast to try to get his head straight, using his passion for cycling as a tool.
GoPro slung me every piece of gadgetry known to man, and then I had to work out how I was going to make this thing work. Those little cameras pack a wild visual punch! Alaistair says. The film does a far better job of summing up the trip than I can here, but let's just say it was fun, hilarious and hard, but we got it done. I was thinking short, sharp, simple and episodic for the film element, Sam was thinking of premiering it at Cannes (lol), and where we ended up was somewhere in between. But we're still friends, and we had a lot of fun. So I guess that's the ultimate success of it, regardless of play counts.
The trip follows as the two friends explore how to best deal with head noise by speaking to phycologists, pro surfers and friends who've faced their own personal challenges. This all takes place over a two-week span, totaling 1,000 miles. The journey starts off in the Northern Rivers, where people faced devastating floods in 2021, before moving down to the South Coast, an area that also faced its own natural disaster with the bushfires in 2019.
Alistair's story is one of honest, raw emotion as he explores what more can be done to help people cope with mental health issues and to drown out the head noise, including his own. For him, there isn't a silver bullet to solve his battle with mental health, but cycling is certainly one thing he's found that helps with his battle to keep his head noise at bay.
