,70 Primary school children have competed in ecoknowledge

3,720 Primary school children have competed in ecoknowledge Ljubljana, 12 March 2012 Slovenian primary school children are acquiring ecoknowledge and competing for the title of greatest ecodudes. A total of 1,240 teams from 153 schools competed in school EcoQuiz competitions, which took place online. This year's EcoQuiz focused on the topics of waste, water, and food. The three-member teams which won in their regions will participate in the national competition, to be held in April.

Ecoschools participating in EcoQuiz are divided among eight regions. The highest number of teams, 338, competed in the Maribor region. This was followed by central Slovenia, with 330 teams, and Pomurje, with 173 teams. A total of 155 teams competed in the Novo mesto region, 171 in the Celje region, 79 in the Littoral region, 52 in Northern Littoral region, and 14 in Gorenjska. The materials for EcoQuiz are adapted for the age of the children participating. This year the sixth graders learned about waste, seventh graders about water, and eighth graders about food. Slovenia is among the most active countries in the European EcoSchool program, which includes 740 schools, kindergartens, and other educational institutions. Every year, organizations included in the EcoSchool program carry out a number of activities aimed at educating about ecology, including the EcoQuiz. The EcoQuiz is organized for children in 6th, 7th and 8th grades of primary school, and it gives them in-depth knowledge about individual environmental issues. This knowledge is connected with other environmental activities, which provides for comprehensive education about an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. It is especially important that children take the knowledge and habits acquired in the project home and pass them to their parents and other family members, who did not receive such education when they were young, the national coordinator for the EcoSchool program Gregor Cerar said.

We have been participating as a partner in the EcoQuiz project for four years now. The quiz is designed for primary school children, with whom we assume responsibility for our future and successfully transfer the acquired ecoknowledge to our everyday lives. This year as well the positive response to EcoQuiz continues, and praise for this goes primarily to the mentors. This way we are all actively encouraging development in environmental protection, which is also the main condition for the functioning of the entire society, said Darinka Pavli Kamien, the head of Telekom Slovenije's Corporate Communications. EcoQuiz's mission and this nationwide socially responsible campaign are the reasons why Telekom Slovenije is proud to award the three best schools in EcoQuiz with funds for concrete eco investments. We believe that this will also contribute to a much better tomorrow.

EcoQuiz mentor from Marija Vera primary school in Kamnik, Katarina Komatar said that the interest in this years EcoQuiz was remarkable and that almost all six graders from the school took part in the competition. Children decide to compete due to interesting ecotopics. Interactive materials and competition make the quiz even more attractive for the children, and that is also reflected in their independent work. Preparations partly took place in the computer classroom at school, where teams read the materials together and practiced by answering questions, while children also spent a lot of time learning at home, said Petra Skoir, a mentor at the Louis Adami primary school from Grosuplje.

Since the partnership with Telekom Slovenije was launched the EcoQuiz has been fully held online. The materials, practice questions, all instructions and information, as well as questions for the competitions are available to competitors and their mentors at http://eko.telekom.si. The attractive way of competing is the main reason why the number of competitors in EcoQuiz keeps increasing.
