The Forgotten Kingdom, the first movie filmed in Lesotho and in the Sesotho-language, was released on 4 April and shot to the number one spot on circuit in its opening weekend in Maseru, the country s capital.

Directed by Andrew Mudge, the film outperformed Hollywood blockbusters Captain America and Noah at Ster-Kinekor s Pioneer Mall cinema.

The film has been nominated in nine African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) categories, including Best Feature Film, Best Director of a Feature Film, Best First Feature Film by a Director, Best Actor (Zenzo Ngqobe) and Best Cinematography. Lebohang Ntsane has also received a nomination for Best Child Actor.

Says executive producer Chris Roland of ZenHQ: We are very proud of the nominations, and we congratulate the entire cast and crew. Special mention must go to Lebohang Ntsane, for his excellent performance as a young orphan boy. Lebohang was chosen from more than 700 aspiring young actors in Lesotho.

In the movie, Atang Mokoenya (Zenzo Ngqobe) lives in Johannesburg and travels to his birth country Lesotho, the land he has forgotten, to bury his estranged father. During his journey he gets drawn in by the mystical beauty of Lesotho and connects with his childhood friend, Dineo, with whom he falls in love. But winning her father s approval proves to be a very difficult task

Comments Mudge: I wanted the story to be told through the colours of the land and the faces of the Basotho people. My own experience of discovering this country was like finding something exquisite and unique.

I wanted to convey that experience to an audience through the journey of the main character. Atang Mokoenya is a man who unwillingly experiences a life transformation when he returns to a place that had he long ago chose to forget, says the director.

Best known for his starring role as Stone Khuse on the e.tv s soapie Rhythm City, South African actor Zenzo Ngqobe stars as Atang. The cast also includes actors Nozipho Nkelemba, Jerry Mofokeng, Moshoeshoe Chabeli, Jerry Phele and Lillian Dube.

The Forgotten Kingdom was co-produced by South African production companies Binary Film Works and ZenHQ Films, and New York-based Black Kettle films and Stringman.

TR Boyce Jr, Pieter Lombaard, Cecil Matlou and Andrew Mudge are the producers and the executive producers are Terry Leonard (Strongman) and Chris Roland (ZenHQ Films).

The Forgotten Kingdom screens nationwide in South Africa from 11 April.
