SVG College: Philadelphia, the latest in the SVG College Regional Event Series, attracted athletic-department video-production professionals and top technology vendors to the Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University on Wednesday for discussions ranging from training student crews to planning live basketball-game productions to executing comprehensive social-media strategies.
A panel on video-production technology at the SVG College: Philadelphia event comprised (from left) Canon USA's Rich Eilers, BlueFrame Technology's Ben Kant, Panasonic's Stuart Lamb, Avid's Doug Price, and Riedel Communications' Phil Stein.
An opening session on best practices in live basketball production focused on camera placement, production facilities, and, perhaps most important, building, training, and staffing student crews. The conversation was led by Cody Chrusciel, assistant director, athletics multimedia and production, Princeton University; Greg Viscomi, associate athletics director, communications and new media, Monmouth University; and Ryan Koletti, now senior production manager, Philadelphia 76ers, who spoke on his experience producing live coverage at the University of Pennsylvania.
The following session on best social-media-video ideas and preferences offered Morgyn Seigfried, assistant AD, digital media, Temple University; Ryan Christiansen, multimedia and production coordinator, Villanova University; and Gary Kowal, assistant athletics director, new media and communications, Monmouth University, explaining how they approach Facebook Live and feed the beast that is Twitter and whether they prefer using the Stories feature on either Instagram or Snapchat.
Attendees were treated to a peek inside Liacouras Center's new video-control room, which debuts this month with the start of the men's basketball season.
In the afternoon, the conversations shifted to technology as representatives from five of the SVG College Initiative's 12 sponsors took to the front of the room to share their latest developments and to field questions on how their companies are developing solutions to fit the specific needs of the college-sports-video community. Canon USA's Rich Eilers, BlueFrame Technology's Ben Kant, Panasonic's Stuart Lamb, Avid's Doug Price, and Riedel Communications' Phil Stein took part in the presentation.
The event received its exclamation point when the Temple University video-production team provided an inside look at how it has built up its efforts over the past three years. Assistant AD, Video Services, Kevin Copp, Video Production Manager Scott Hartkorn, and Video Production Coordinator Richie Raspa described their approach to video content, working hand-in-hand with marketing and digital, and offered an exclusive tour of their new video-production-control room at the Liacouras Center, which debuts this month with the start of the men's basketball season.
The SVG College Regional Event Series is a recurring series of half-day programs hosted by various schools across the country that have demonstrated a commitment to and investment in live video production. The shows are designed to bring together content creators and production-technology specialists with some of the industry's top technology vendors to discuss best practices for those at all levels of production expertise. Seasoned veterans share their experiences and help guide those looking to dive headfirst into the exciting world of video production in college athletics.
The SVG College Initiative and its events are made possible by sponsors Avid, Bexel, BlueFrame Technology, Canon, Grass Valley, JVCKENWOOD, LTN Global Communications, Panasonic, Quantum, Riedel, Ross Video, and Sony.
