Meghan Markle to reportedly succeed Queen Elizabeth II as patron of the National Theatre

If a source close to the Royal family can be believed, the ruling monarch may be ready to hand over a coveted patronage to the former actress. As reported by Daily Mail, Meghan is set to be named patron of the National Theatre.

The theatre, situated on London's South Bank, was opened by the Queen more than four decades ago. The landmark theatre produces more than a 1,000 performances yearly.

While Kensington Palace has not yet announced the news officially, sources say the gesture is a sign of the Queens growing confidence in Meghan. Speculation about the handover began back in December when Meghan met with the theatre's director, Rufus Norris, at a private event.

A new set of duties for MeghanAs a Royal Patron of the National Theatre, Meghan would be strengthening connections between the theatre and American benefactors, a role that would be fitting, based on her history in the entertainment industry. According to Harper's Bazaar:

The role may also involve working with The American Associates of the National Theatre, a New York-based charity that helps raise funds for the theatre's productions.

The former actress was known for her portrayal of Rachel Zane on seven seasons of Suits. The award-winning actress gave up acting when she married Prince Harry in May 2018.

A love for performance arts and empowering communitiesSince joining the Royal family, Meghan joined Queen Elizabeth at the Storyhouse Theatre for its prestigious opening. In December, she visited a care home for retired actors and was also spotted in London's West End with Prince Harry, where they watched Hamilton.

Meghan stepped away from the limelight after Christmas Day, but fans can look forward to seeing her and Prince Harry on 14 January when they attend to their first public engagement of 2019.

They will meet with local organisations in Birkenhead that assist youths with disabilities and offer workshops for women in the area. Their visit aims to empower groups within the community.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will visit Birkenhead on Monday 14th January.
