HE Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Media Centre, today received HE Paul R Malik, US Consul General in Dubai, at Al Majaz Amphitheatre in Sharjah. The two discussed the close cultural and economic relations Sharjah and the UAE have historically enjoyed with the United States. Talking about the close UAE-US relations, the Consul General pointed that more than 3,000 Emirati students are currently studying in the US.
HE Malik praised His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah for developing Sharjah as the Cultural Capital of the Arab and Islamic world in general and for his efforts to promote dialogue and understanding between various cultures. He also lauded HH the Ruler of Sharjah for groundbreaking initiatives such as the Sharjah International Book Fair and monumental reading initiatives undertaken by the Emirate. Applauding the rich cultural milieu of the Emirate, especially its dozens of museums and cultural centres, he talked about his visit to the Sharjah Archeological Museum and its collection.
Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi briefed the Consul General and his delegation on the role and responsibilities of the Sharjah Media Centre (SMC) and how it is helping various government entities in Sharjah reach out to the media besides empowering young Emiratis and encouraging them to choose media as a career. They also discussed the various SMC initiatives including the International Government Communication Forum (IGCF) and Government Communication Award and how they have been transforming the landscape of government communication in the UAE and the region.
The Consul General was also apprised of the history of Al Majaz Amphitheatre, which is managed by SMC, and the role it has been playing in developing a movement of cultural understanding and appreciation of music and arts by hosting international stars and Arab musical icons as part of the vision of HH the Ruler of Sharjah.
Later the SMC Chairman offered the visiting US delegation a detailed tour of Al Majaz Amphitheatre and how it would soon be opened to member of public after its Funoon district with its unique boutique shops and restaurants overlooking the Khalid Lagoon. Also present on the occasion were Tariq Saeed Allay, Director of Sharjah Media Centre and other senior officials.
HE Malik praised the Roman colosseum style Al Majaz Amphitheatre for its stunning location in the middle of Khalid Lagoon offering a breathtaking view of Buhaira Corniche, unique style of seating and world-class audiovisual facilities, saying it is ideally located to host large concerts and programmes like MBC's popular Arab Idol.
The Consul General was amazed to know that Al Majaz Amphitheatre had been built within 4 months to coincide with Sharjah's crowning as the Islamic Culture Capital in 2014 on the orders of HH the Ruler of Sharjah. It opened with the debut of grand epic, Clusters of Light, celebrating the fantastic journey of Islam and its Prophet, peace be upon him, and their message of love and peace for the whole world.
