Harris Corporation Delivers Demonstration Platforms for FAAs New IP-based Air Traffic Control Communications Network Highlights:

MELBOURNE, FL/WASHINGTON, October 23, 2013 (Harris Booth #511) Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has delivered three demonstration voice communications platforms that will enable the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to optimize the new air traffic control communications system. The announcement was made during the Air Traffic Controllers Association (ATCA) conference being held October 20-23 at the Gaylord National in Washington, DC. The deliveries are part of the 15-year National Airspace System (NAS) Voice System (NVS) contract awarded to Harris last year. Under the NVS contract, the company is providing a secure, Internet Protocol-based (IP), voice communications system with enhanced management and control capabilities. The network is based on the Harris VCS21 family of commercial-off-the-shelf voice communications solutions. NVS will be installed in air traffic control facilities across the U.S., creating a modern voice system for critical communications between air traffic controllers, pilots and ground personnel. The program is a cornerstone of the FAAs NextGen initiative to transform the U.S. air traffic control system to meet future requirements. It also reduces costs by eliminating multiple switching platforms that are operational in the NAS today. The demonstration systems were installed at the William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey; the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and the Harris NVS Demonstration Laboratory in Melbourne, Florida. They will be used by FAA controllers, operations managers, field engineers and maintenance personnel to familiarize themselves with the new technology. With VCS21, air traffic controllers can leverage new capabilities such as dynamic re-allocation of controller workloads and enhanced, flexible management of the nationwide voice network, said John OSullivan, vice president, NextGen Initiatives for Civil Programs, Harris Government Communications Systems. By helping the FAA to transition from multiple switches to a single, IP-based system, VCS21 will enable improvements in airspace safety, system capacity, flight delays and operating costs.
