Healcare IG: Big Picture Predictions and Perspectives by Nancy Twombly

The First Blog in a New Healthcare InfoGov Series Launching January 2015

As the volume and variety of information in the healthcare industry continues to grow, the need for Information Governance (IG) is paramount. The year 2014 demonstrated to us all that this topic has become top of mind; leading industry associations, including AHIMA and ARMA, are putting increased emphasis on governance, and health systems across the country are undertaking IG initiatives with the focus they demand. IG is also getting support from executive committees; the role of a Chief Data Officer, defined by Wikipedia as a corporate officer responsible for enterprise-wide governance and utilization of information as an asset' is now emerging at a rapid rate across organizations in the US.

As we look ahead to 2015, there will continue to be strategic imperatives that drive information governance initiatives forward, but healthcare organizations also need to understand the practical steps they can take to further their own governance journey. It is important to acknowledge that Information Governance is not a one-and-done' project with a defined time span, but a journey that requires continual focus. By leveraging best practices from both inside and outside the healthcare industry, healthcare providers can streamline their information access and better enable enterprise-wide governance.

To help healthcare organizations make progress on their IG journey, we are launching a blog series this month that will feature the predictions and perspectives on Healthcare Information Governance from leading industry experts; both those within the healthcare industry and those with a cross-industry perspective will provide their views on critical challenges and strategies.
