CALL FOR COMMON LENS- GOLD COAST 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES ARTS AND CULTURAL FESTIVAL DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED

BACKGROUND

The Commonwealth games is an international multi-sport tournament that takes place every four years. In 2018 the commonwealth games will be hosted by the City of the Gold Coast in Australia. Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth games have been extended to include an arts and cultural festival. The Festival will be a force for good, supporting the Commonwealth Games Federation's values of Humanity, Equality and Destiny and using artistic and cultural programs to bring diverse audiences and communities together in celebration of these values.

Jerrycan Films is commissioning up to 5 x 10 minute documentary films from across the Commonwealth for free outdoor screening during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The title for this series of films is COMMON LENS and will include films from across the Commonwealth regions: Africa, Americas, Asia, Caribbean, Europe and Oceania and from the host nation and state, Queensland, Australia.

As a member of Commonwealth, South Africa through the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has partnered with Jerrycan Films to create a short 10 minute documentary film under the theme of Connections'. Expanding on the Commonwealth Games value of Humanity.

South African filmmakers are invited to pitch a documentary film that will embody the Commonwealth Games' values and how they relate to us as a nation. Identifying a strong character driven story that speaks of place and time. The film can have a social change or political message, incorporate poetic or nonlinear forms of narrative, but must be founded in strong ideas that will engage audiences, young and old across diverse backgrounds.

PROPOSALS

We are looking for proposals for a 10 minute documentary short film to be included in a suite of short films from across the Commonwealth as part of a project called COMMON LENS for the arts and cultural program, GC2018 Commonwealth Games.

Your proposal will outline a short film that explores the notion of Connection. How do we connect as human beings, what brings us together and what drives us apart?

We are looking for films that tell a broader cultural story in the context of strong, bold, engaging characters. Stories that have a sports person as a main protagonist are one option, but not a key priority of this project. The aim is for the suite of films to have a diversity of views and perspectives and at the same time demonstrate our un-deniable human connection with each other beyond border lines.

Your film must have high production values, be compelling and heartfelt. It must not be didactic, may be poetic in feel. It may also give voice to strong issues from within your country, told via amazing characters that audiences can build strong emotional connections with.

The film must be completed by 1 March 2018. The budget for this film is $ 30 000/+- R313 265.00 for all costs (production and post-production) including archive /or any rights that might need clearance.

COMPULSORY APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

All applicants must submit the following compulsory documentation:

CV of key management and creative team

Budget and proposed production schedule

Showreel and/ or portfolio of work

BBEEE certificate

Original valid tax clearance certificate

Company registration document and

A fully developed project

Failure to submit any one of the compulsory documentation will render the application incomplete and therefore disqualified for consideration.
