Providing a scalable, redundant file system is not nearly enough in an increasingly educated market that expects more.

A number of vendors don't even do that. They believe fast' is good enough. Sure fast is fine if you need to perform blazingly fast calculations or serve up guaranteed streams to 20 editors working on 4K footage, but those are niche workflows and are use cases that require specialities in IOPS or bandwidth. Yet those same storage platforms are being offered by those same vendors to protect and preserve petabytes of digital content in a wide variety of workflows.

It's a pretty risk-laden way to implement a digital preservation strategy given all they provide is quick access to data in a file system the customer has to manage. Then there are the deep archive providers who are now offering big chunks of disk as a nearline cache before the data goes to sleep. The problem is that chunk of disk cache needs to be managed, is prone to error and offers little more than a file system to store your data. When most organisations are looking to implement automated and integrated workflows dumb NAS or SAN solutions are just not appropriate.

If you want more than just a file system' you will need to add multiple layers of 3rd party solutions to provide the levels of business rules, security, auditing, sharing, collaboration, business continuity or disaster recovery strategies your organisation requires. Which ultimately means you will need to reach for the cheque book once again (sorry it has to be the cheque book as not even your smart phone can pay for these items. No tappy tappy here).

Much like a cassette radio was extra in your 1980s BMW so too today are any manner of functions that are required to manage petabytes of content in multiple workflows with little or no human resource. Dumb islands or SAN and NAS storage simply do not cut it. They might be cheap' initially but the total cost of ownership (TCO) is often a lot higher than using a proven platform like MatrixStore object storage.

Public cloud storage platforms also suffer from 1980s BMW syndrome. You can store your data for x' a month but if you want to actually use it well that will be an extra y' and z'.
