New president and CEO at Korean Broadcasting System

The new CEO of the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) begins his new term in office (28 July). KBS is an Associate Member of the EBU.

South Korean President Geun-hye Park appointed Mr Dae-hyun Cho last Friday on the recommendation of the KBS Board of Governors to head the nations public broadcasters.

At the inauguration ceremony held on Monday morning, Mr Cho spoke about his vision for KBS as a public service broadcaster that meets the wants and needs of its audiences.

He called attention to KBSs history of major achievements, including broadcasts of the reunion of separated families in North Korea, the 2010 Korean expedition up the Himalayan mountains, and the 1988 Summer Olympic Games.

Mr Cho called for KBS to continue on this same path with even greater programming innovation and creativity. He promised to do his best in leading the Korean Wave and providing a public sphere for open discussion.

Mr Cho has a long history with KBS. He joined KBS as a TV producer in 1978 and has since held key positions including foreign correspondent to Tokyo, Executive Director of Culture and Information, Executive Managing Director of TV Division, Executive Vice President of KBS and President of KBS Media.

He also held a Chair Professorship at Soon Chun Hyang University. As a producer and director, he produced such documentaries as KBS Special: North Korea (1998) and China: The History of Oriental Porcelain (2004). Born in 1953, Mr Cho studied history at Korea University.

He will serve as President and CEO of KBS for the remaining term of his predecessor until November 2015.
