Legendary rapper Eminem celebrated his 50th birthday on Monday 17 October. Since starting his music career in 1988, the Grammy award-winning rapper has wowed hip-hop fans with bangers like Lose Yourself, Rap God and Mockingbird. Take a look at five iconic Eminem songs.

1. LOSE YOURSELF' Eminem's Lose Yourself featured on the soundtrack of the 2002 movie 8 Mile. The following year, the track made history as the first hip-hop track to win the Oscar Award for Best Original Song.

Lose Yourself has celebrated several achievements including topping the music charts in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland and more.

2. RAP GOD' Rap God featured on Eminem's 2013 album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2. In 2015, the song entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the most words in a hit single. The rapper packs 1 560 words in six minutes and four seconds, which is an average of 4.28 words per second!

3. MY NAME IS' Produced by Eminem's close friend and colleague, Dr.Dre, My Name Is is the lead single of his 1999 album, The Slim Shady LP. The track samples British singer Labi Siffre's 1975, I Got The Although the Grammy-winning song was a hit with fans, it landed Eminem in hot water with his mother.

Debbie Mathers filed a $10 million (R181 million) lawsuit against Eminem after claiming she uses drugs. After the matter was settled, Mathers only received $1 600 (R28.9k) from her son.

4. WITHOUT ME' When the first few bars of this song plays, it's instantly recognisable. Without Me features on the rapper's 2002 album, The Eminem Show. Naturally, the song dominated awards and the rapper walked away with four wins at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards.

5. MOCKINGBIRD' Mockingbird is one of Eminem's more serious hip-hop songs. In the 2005 hit, the rapper addresses his relationship with his daughter adding that he wants to be a better father. The song was his fifth single from his 2005 album, Encore.
