Talk us through an average day in your role. My average day can involve assisting our ops team in the event of any issues or responding to sales/customer queries, alongside RFPs, project work, and documentation. Every day is different.

Jayne Hilton, lead engineer, Globecast How did you get started in the media industry? I was very lucky to have started my career in BBC Outside Broadcasts where a team mentality was fostered at all levels. Each department had their role to play in delivering a successful outcome.

What training did you have before entering the industry? I took part in a course at Salford Polytechnic in Audio and Video Systems and I also worked as a tape op in a recording studio. Initially, I wanted to become a cameraperson, but becoming an engineer seemed logical after I started my BBC training.

Why do you enjoy working in the industry? As I mentioned, every day is different. Being an engineer also taps into my inquisitive and creative mind, keeping me on my toes every single day.

What piece of advice would you offer someone looking to explore a similar role to yours? One piece of advice I'd share is to focus on communication and being open to new ideas and opinions. We can all learn from each other at whatever level we are at, and this is especially important with emerging technology. I will also be applying to Rise as a mentor for the next cohort and recommend joining such initiatives to gain experience and knowledge from industry peers.
