Barbara Goodmon Honored for Contributions to Shaw University

Estey Hall located on the campus of Shaw University has seen untold numbers of events since it was built in 1873, but recently it was the site of a celebration of one of the life blood institutions of the university. The Hall hosted Shaw University's 2015 United Negro College Fund Scholarship Gala. It was also a special evening in that one of our own, Barbara Goodmon, was honored for her community service and philanthropy. The presentation recounted that she has been a lifelong advocate for her community and a promoter of high-quality support for those in need.

Many were amazed to know that Goodmon began her career at age 22, as head nurse in the pediatric trauma and burn unit in Memphis, TN. She was nearby when Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated and this proved to be a turning point in her life. After marrying Jim Goodmon, now CBC's President & CEO, and moving to North Carolina, she began dedicating herself to civic and social changes through decades of community engagement, board service and philanthropy.

It's very difficult to highlight all of her outstanding community initiatives, but here are a few: President of the A.J. Fletcher Foundation since 2003 and Executive Director 2003-2012. The Salvation Army of Wake County named its new women's shelter after her last year. She served as the first and only female Salvation Army board Chairman from 1985-1987. As Vice Chairman of The Healing Place of Wake County in 2001, Mrs. Goodmon started a substance abuse treatment center for homeless men and women in Raleigh. This facility has provided more than one million beds of shelter and days of recovery. She served on the board of the Wake County Human Services board from 1996-2005; three of those years as Chairman. If her life as a wife, mother and grandmother, isn't busy enough, she is a member of the Meredith College Board of Trustees, North Carolina State University College of Humanities and Social Science Advisory Board, University of North Carolina School of Social Work Board of Visitors, University of North Carolina School of the Arts Board of Trustees, and the Raleigh Fine Arts Society just to name a few. Her current position is President and Board Member of the Fletcher Academy.

Education is very important to her as she holds a nursing degree from St. Joseph's School of Nursing, a Bachelor of Arts degree from Meredith College (magna cum laude) and a Masters of Liberal Studies from North Carolina State University.

A number of CBC'ers family and friends were on hand to celebrate this latest acknowledgement.
