VSN participates in the EUMI European research project

Along with key European institutions in the field of research and technological development, such as Pompeu Fabra University, German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle, IDIAP Research Institute from Switzerland or the Leibniz University of Hannover, VSN is working on the development of a new technology to help journalists in their daily work.

The main goal of EUMSSI (Event Understanding through Multimodal Stream Interpretation) is to develop technologies for identifying and aggregating data presented as unstructured information in sources of very different nature (video, image, audio, speech, text and social context), including both online (e.g., YouTube) and traditional media (e.g. audio visual repositories), and dealing with information of very different degrees of granularity.

Given a certain topic, the multimodal interpretation platform will identify during the editing process which multimedia items might be interesting for the journalist and offers a list of items categorized by content type (e.g. video, audio, text), relevance, up-to-dateness etc. This way, a journalist can have a complete panorama of what is going on and what the different parts involved in a topic are saying, along with complete information about the discussion in the social networks.

The EUMSSI project is a great chance for us to collaborate, with our resources and know-how, with some of the most well-known European research institutions on the development of a technology that can simplify and enhance journalist's work , declares Jordi Utiel, VSN's President and CEO. EUMSSI is part of the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration and has a duration of three years. VSN is collaborating in this project with key European actors in the research field and technological sector: Pompeu Fabra University (Spain), Leibniz University of Hannover (Germany), Universit du Maine (France), IDIAP Research Institute (Switzerland), Deutsche Welle (Germany) and GFAI (Germany).
