Bruce Doering, who retires at the end of the year after 30 years as executive director of the International Cinematographers Guild (ICG, IATSE Local 600), received a surprise award at the 19th Annual Emerging Cinematographer Awards held at the Directors Guild of America theater in Los Angeles on Sunday (September 27).

He was the first recipient of the newly-established annual Bruce C. Doering Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contributions advocating policies and legislation favorable to labor workers. In presenting the award, ICG president, Steven Poster, ASC. said, The very first time this award will be given is to you, my friend. No one deserves it more.

In addition, Los Angeles City Councilmember David Ryu presented Doering with a city proclamation honoring him for the work he does on behalf of the labor movement.

Eight short films, selected by a jury of ICG members around the country, were screened at the event. The cinematography for these films was by guild members who are not yet classified as directors of photography. The grand prize, a $60,000 camera equipment rental package donated by Panavision Equipment, went to Michael Nie for his work as cinematographer on Dust.

All eight honorees received multiple prizes donated by the event's sponsors.

Special guest speaker, actress Lindsay Wagner, said how much she appreciated the work of cinematographers. The DP was the person who brought the director's ideas to reality and it was important for actors to understand what the cinematographer needed from them.

Impresario Sponsor, Canon USA, Inc. gave all the honorees the Cinema EOS Camera Package for a six month loaner.
