Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson Joins National Geographic Education Foundation Board

WASHINGTON (Nov. 19, 2013)-Marillyn Hewson, CEO and president of Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT], has been appointed to the board of the National Geographic Education Foundation. She joins 15 other board members who are distinguished leaders in education, business, finance, media and civil service.

The National Geographic Education Foundation was founded in 1988 to promote and advance geography education. Housed in the Education Programs division of National Geographic, the Foundation oversees endowments used to support professional development for teachers, the creation and dissemination of educational resources, activities to boost public awareness of the importance of geography education and advocacy for public policies that will lead to improvements in geography education. Since its founding, the Foundation has awarded more than $80 million in grants.

The National Geographic Education Foundation welcomes Marillyn Hewson's selection to the board, said Foundation Board Chairman and National Geographic Society Chairman and CEO John Fahey. Her record of leadership and community involvement speaks for itself, and her business experience brings a keen understanding of the job skills we need to be fostering in today's students.

Hewson, also a member of Lockheed Martin's board of directors, has spent 30 years at the company, holding operational leadership positions and key executive roles. She serves on the board of directors of DuPont and the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation and on the USO board of governors, and she chaired the Sandia Corporation board of directors from 2010 to 2013. In September 2013, Hewson was appointed by President Obama to the President's Export Council, the principal national advisory committee on international trade.

Selected by Fortune magazine as one of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business for the past four years, Hewson also was named by Forbes as one of the World's 100 Most Powerful Women in 2013.
