WISE Meets the Women of GoPro s San Diego Office

The women of the GoPro San Diego office hosted the San Diego chapter of Women in Sports and Events (WISE) for a fireside panel discussion this past week. The panel, which was selected to reflect the many sides of GoPro, included Director of Media Relations Kelly Baker, Senior Copywriter Jennifer Flanigan Haack, Software Program Manager Ashley Solmose and Senior Social Marketing Manager/event moderator Katie Babineau.

The audience of more than 40 women, which included the WISE board of directors, learned about a range of topics ranging from life around GoPro to all-around career building advice. A good portion of the event was dedicated to sharing about the inaugural GoPro Women's Summit.

The summit took place in November 2016 and brought GoPro's female employees together from around the world for a day of bonding and personal growth. The idea of conceptualizing and executing such an empowering event, especially in the sports and events industries, proved to resonate with the audience made up of female team leaders representing everything from photography to PR to female-run companies.

During the Q&A, questions focused on thriving in the male-dominate action sports industry. The advice: don't be afraid to get outside your comfort zone and trust in your expertise.

In your career, you have to get comfortable being uncomfortable, and the only way you can really do that is through practice, Kelly said. Give yourself a pep talk before you enter a big meeting and believe in what you have to say. You were invited to the meeting for a reason.

The other key takeaway from the evening was creating a work-life balance that allows you to be the best mother, daughter, friend and employee that you can be simultaneously. The trick unanimously shared by the GoPro crew was to know when to say yes, know when to say no and learn to delegate.
