Amsterdam, 17 September 2013 IBC2013 closed today, having welcomed a record number of attendees through its doors. A total of 52,974 attendees conference delegates, exhibition visitors, exhibitors and press came together to share knowledge, conduct valuable business and set the industry agenda.
Thanks to everyone who has exhibited and visited IBC2013, said Michael Crimp, IBC CEO. We are continually evolving what we offer, to reflect the changes in our industry. That we continue to attract this sort of number of attendees shows that we remain relevant right across the industry, right around the world.
Our visitors span from CEOs at our Leaders' Summit to the newest entrants to the business in the Rising Stars programme, he continued. We are proud to be the place where the whole industry comes together each year.
The diversity of IBC today can be seen in the fact that there were 431 speakers in the conference. As well as the heads of some of the major broadcasters, this number also included His Highness Prince Fahad al Saud; creator of Borgen' and The Killing' Morten Hesseldahl; and Indian superstar and veteran of 185 films Amitabh Bachchan.
The IBC Leaders' Summit once again attracted more than 140 CEOs and senior executives of the largest media businesses. This year the debates that took place behind closed doors fell under the theme Please Adjust Your Set: Retuning Your Strategy for the Connected Era', and discussed how the industry has to refocus its strategy to seize the new opportunities. IBC also focuses on those just entering the industry, with its Rising Stars programme giving young professionals the chance to attend IBC. At this years' programme, 249 delegates benefited from special coaching and orientation sessions, as well as the opportunity to network with their peers.
Filling the 14 halls and the outdoor exhibition area around the RAI, more than 1,400 exhibiting companies welcomed the visitors.
While it is the sheer diversity of the industry that is addressed in both the conference and the exhibition, inevitably some key themes shine through. This year, there was huge interest not just in cloud services, but particularly in the possibilities of big data, to provide detailed information on audiences and thereby deliver tailored services and drive revenues. 4k resolution and beyond was another key talking point, with stunning demonstrations on many stands.
A regular feature of the exhibition, this year the IBC Production Insight stage showcased the latest in LED screen technologies as well as giving visitors the chance to get hands-on time with the latest in camera technology. IBC Workflow Solutions supplemented its regular series of case study presentations with IBC Workflow Connexions - a new and exclusive members club. This club gave visitors an Near Field Communication (NFC) device to share contacts and collect information seamlessly with the ability to view these on their own online profile.
Visitors got a glimpse of what might be headline news at IBC in years to come in the Future Zone, where researchers could share their ideas in prototype. Highlights included demonstrations of the benefits of higher frame rate television systems. The IBC Big Screen was once more home to complimentary movie screenings, of The Wolverine, courtesy of 20th Century Fox' and Top Gun 3D, courtesy of Paramount Pictures', as well as demonstrations of some of the latest acquisition, post production and projection systems.
The packed audience at the IBC Awards Ceremony on Sunday night also enjoyed some stunning presentations, not least a first look at the trailer for the forthcoming movie The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug', in high frame rate 3D. This was part of the celebration of Director Sir Peter Jackson, this year's recipient of the IBC International Honour for Excellence. Also honoured was the centenary of cinema in India, with a presentation to Amitabh Bachchan, who collected the award on behalf of the Indian film industry and a musical clip from Bombay Talkies'.
IBC are already taking bookings for IBC2014, which will take place again at the RAI in Amsterdam between 11 16 September. To find out more about IBC and to keep up with the latest news and developments, please visit www.ibc.org.
