IBC CONSTRUCTION BEGINS IN RIO DE JANEIRO - 13/12/2013 Construction on the IBC for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil has got off to a fine start following the official handover of the Riocentro venue on 1 December. Work began immediately on the construction and installation of the space which will be home to - at last count - broadcasters from over 70 organisations next summer.

Work on the IBC at Riocentro, based roughly 30 kilometres east of the Maracana venue in the Barra da Tijuca suburb, commenced in Halls 3 and 4, space which will house MRL premises, service desks and production facilities. Hall 5, which will be home to FIFA and HBS offices, the Briefing Room and the ITCC, will be handed over to HBS on 13 January 2014.

Halls 3 and 4 each cover areas in excess of 30,000 sqm, with the largest individual MRL space covering an area measuring 2,269 sqm. The production area has 2,700 sqm set aside while the MCR, CER, CSC and Off Tubes have been allocated 602 sqm while over 2,500 sqm in total will be used to house the office space of various HBS departments.

With work confidently moving forward right on schedule, HBS was able to open the doors to the IBC to broadcasters returning home via Rio de Janeiro from the Final Draw for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil - held in the north-east coastal resort of Costa do Sauipe on 6 December. HBS Head of Construction Ronald den Hollander led the visit, thereby ensuring a direct line of communication between rights holders and the very staff who are presently overseeing the creation of the broadcast hub for next summer's event.

The tour gave them the chance to become familiar with their working environment next summer, its geographic location within the Barra region, to pose any questions related to their premises to the team overseeing the project and to find the exact spot within of their future premises.

In parallel, the progress of the construction has been inspected by Francis Tellier, CEO of HBS, Joerg Sander, Director of the FWC 2014 project for HBS, and Daniel Wlochovski, Director of Booking. They were impressed by the good start of the construction, and congratulated Ronald, Juan Mancheno, his deputy, Joao Gama, Head of the HBS IBC Rio Construction Office, and their teams.

The IBC will open its doors to MRLs from Monday 12 May, with the Construction Help Desk, IBC Booking Office and IBC Broadcast Information Office all open for business on the same day to ensure broadcasters have all the assistance and information required to make their arrival as smooth as possible.
