The first fully-IP live on-air broadcast took place
Nevion, award-winning provider of virtual media production infrastructure, has assisted the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Belgian public broadcasting company VRT in delivering the first live on-air broadcast using the VRT Sandbox LiveIP Studio. The broadcast took place on 20 June 2016 and was part of programming for Ketnet, VRT's children's channel. Nevion's software defined network (SDN) solution based on VikinX eMerge equipment and service management platform, VideoIPath, forms the backbone of the set-up used in the live production.
The channel's product team requested use of the LiveIP studio set up due to its flexibility and performance demonstrated during earlier phases of the LiveIP project. The set-up will continue to be used for Ketnet's live and outside broadcasting requirements during the summer.
The VRT Sandbox LiveIP is the world's first proof of concept of a complete live production that relies exclusively on IP. It is driven by VRT and the EBU and is powered by a long list of partners including Nevion, Axon, Dwesam, EVS, Genelec, Grass Valley, Lawo, Tektronix and Trilogy. Using existing open standards SMPTE 2022-6, AES67/RAVENNA, PTP and OpenFlow (for SDN), this venture demonstrates a high level of interoperability and leverages the unique benefits of IP to create efficiencies such as remote production and automation.
A year into the project, we remain delighted to be involved and working with VRT, the EBU and other vendors to demonstrate the power and benefits of IP, particularly in a broadcast grade project, says Geir Bryn-Jensen, CEO, Nevion. This live broadcast is the ideal proof point for further adoption of IP throughout the broadcast workflow and in live production, and of course in promoting interoperability and the use of common standards.
The VRT Sandbox LiveIP Studio project recently won the 2016 EBU Award for Technology & Innovation and is shortlisted for the prestigious IBC 2016 Innovations Awards, in the Content Creation category.
