Animation SA partners with DISCOP Africa to present The Animation Lounge --

Animation SA, the non-profit company representing South Africa s animation industry, is partnering with DISCOP Johannesburg 2016 to present The Animation Lounge, a platform aimed at offering tailored value to delegates in the fields of animation and VFX at the three-day market event.

DISCOP, the largest African content market, provides an opportunity for local producers to network with broadcasters, pay-tv platforms, mobile networks, online operators, producers, advertisers, influencers and investors from around Africa (65%) and beyond (35%).

This year, we re bringing leading international animation broadcasters to the table, says Nick Wilson, chair of the Export Missions Committee of Animation SA, who facilitated the partnership. 2016 will also be the first time students will be able to access the event.

The Animation Lounge will offer a presentation session on the main conference programme, a full day of panel discussions, master classes, and share sessions hosted by representatives from leading international broadcasters, as well as the opportunity to take part in a pitching competition to showcase projects in progress.

We are looking forward to hosting this lounge with the potential of expanding this initiative to the other DISCOP markets, says Gert Botes, Conference and Workshop Director of DISCOP Africa.

Animation SA has arranged a 50% discounted rate of $125 to all its members, offering them:

Access to the Animation Lounge,

Access to all the workshop events and the matchmaking portal, and

Free general access to Jozi Film Festival.

Students will be able to access the Lounge for R600.

DISCOP welcomed over 2500 delegates last year and registered over a billion US dollars in sales. This is a reflection not only of the relevance of the event, but of a general boom in African content.

If you consider the volume of business concluded at DISCOP Africa 2015, this is an incredible opportunity for South Africa s animation industry, says Wilson. The dynamism of Africa s audiovisual industries is expected to continue; according to PWC s Entertainment and Media Outlook (2015 2019), for example, South Africa s TV market the largest on the continent is expected to reach R40.9 billion by 2019.

This partnership represents the growing potential and clout of South Africa s animation and VFX industries within that landscape, he adds.

The 2016 DISCOP event will take place in Johannesburg from 2 to 4 November at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The deadline for registration is 2 September.
