Ster-Kinekor to host first Indian International Film Festival of Sou Africa

Ster-Kinekor, in partnership with Utkarsh Projects, announces that it is hosting the first Indian International Film Festival of South Africa (IIFFSA), during January at selected cinemas. Featuring a variety of titles, languages and genres from the booming Indian film industry, the festival promises an explosion of sound, colour, dance and action.

The festival provides a unique opportunity for Indian and South African cultures and cinema to connect on the big screen. The Indian International Film Festival of South Africa will be presented from Friday, 17 January to Thursday, 23 January.

Brought to South Africa by Utkarsh Projects, IIFFSA will showcase various feature films, short films and documentaries at select times at four Ster-Kinekor sites. During the festival, 25 titles will be released at The Zone @Rosebank in Johannesburg, Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Durban, Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria and Cavendish Square in Cape Town. Standard ticket prices apply and bookings are now open for an opportunity to experience some of the best of Indian cinema here in South Africa.

Says Doug Place, marketing executive of Ster-Kinekor Theatres: We are delighted to be in partnership with Utkarsh Projects to bring this innovative festival to our local audiences for the first time. This genre of cinema is an important focus for us, and it is pleasing that we are now able to offer Bollywood, Tamil and other Indian-language films at more of our cinemas. This is as a direct result of the completion of the digital conversion across all our sites that enables us to access more prints and screen these in more of our cinemas, thus reaching a wider consumer base.

Rajiv Terwadkar, director of Utkarsh Projects Private Limited, comments: Through IIFFSA and various other initiatives that we are launching over the festival period, we aim to connect African and Indian cultures using cinema as the medium. It is also our intention to discover and train local actors and filmmakers, and to start community development projects both in Africa and India.

With such an array of films on offer during IIFFSA, the festival provides a unique opportunity to view many titles that would otherwise not be readily available to South African audiences.
