MUSIEK VIR DIE AGTERGROND and VERRAAIERS awarded at IIFFSA

John-Henry Opperman (Best Actor: South Africa) and Sallas de Jager (Best Director: South Africa) won for their work on Musiek vir die Agtergrond. Verraaiers, written by De Jager and directed by Paul Eilers won Best Film: South Africa. Jay Anstey won Best actress: South Africa for her performance in Sleepers Wake.

All Indian films were adjudicated by an all South African panel and South African Films by an all Indian panel.

IIFFSA is an annual film festival (now in its second year) aimed at promoting the exchange of contemporary and cultural ideas, friendship and social development through the medium of cinema. This event envisages to showcase the latest and critically acclaimed work in cinema across African, Bollywood and other Indian regional cinema to the African community as well as Indian citizens presently in South Africa. The event also acts as a stage to established and upcoming talent in the area of cinema.

According to one of the festival organizers Rajiv Terwadkar, the prime objective of IIFFSA is to bond Indian and African cultures through the glamorous world of cinema.

De Jager said: Its a humbling experience to be rewarded for your work by a panel of judges compiled by Bollywood actors, directors and Festival programers. It just goes to show that universal stories will touch people all over the world and that South African stories should be seen more often oversees.
