KCET Weekly Series SOCAL CONNECTED Receives First National Edward R. Murrow Award

BURBANK, CA - June 12, 2014 - KCETLink, the national independent public media organization, is pleased to announce that it has been honored with its first National Edward R. Murrow Award by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) for its weekly news series, SOCAL CONNECTED.

SOCAL CONNECTEDs piece, Nothing to Cheer About, which explored the dangers young women face in cheerleading, won for best sports reporting in the large market television category. The segment was produced by Angela Shelley; Laura Ling, reporter; Alicia Clark, associate producer; Michael Bloecher, editor.

This year, RTDNA awarded 98 national Edward R. Murrow Awards in 13 categories including Overall Excellence, Breaking News, Investigative Reporting and more. RTDNA received more than 4,000 entries during the 2014 awards season, surpassing 2013 by more than 500 entries and setting an all-time record for entries in what proved to be one of the most competitive Edward R. Murrow Awards seasons in RTDNA history.

The national awards will be presented at the New York Marriott Marquis in New York City on October 6, 2014.

Currently in its sixth season, SOCAL CONNECTED is anchored by 15-time Emmy-Award winner, Val Zavala. Contributors to SOCAL CONNECTED include science journalist Cara Santa Maria, reporters Derrick Shore and Jennifer Sabih, documentary filmmaker Nic Cha Kim and writer Nick Hardcastle.

SOCAL CONNECTED airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. and repeats Fridays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 6:30 p.m. Weekly segments are also available online at socalconnected.org.
