RT Innovating for the Future Young Digital Champions' visit RT to experience new technologies and explore future digital possibilities for RT

Tuesday, 19th April, 2016: With a focus on innovating for the future, RT today hosted a group of young Digital Champions' in RT to experience new technologies and explore future digital possibilities for RT . The group of forty transition year students representing schools from across the country visited as part of the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources Schools Digital Champions Programme, which enables teachers to integrate technology in the classroom and enables students to showcase their digital skills.

The innovation day at RT focused on three strands;

Digital Creators of Tomorrow - equipping the Digital Champions' to be the digital creators of the future by providing them with mobile journalism training

Experiencing New Technologies - Google's virtual reality team were invited in to deliver a demonstration of Google Cardboard and Expeditions Pioneer Programme which takes children on immersive virtual fieldtrips to Space, the Great Barrier reef and Everest among many others

Innovating for the Future the young Digital Champions' participated in a creative ideation session, empowering the group to invent new future digital possibilities for RT .

M irne Laffan, RT 's Chief Digital Officer said, Innovation is part of RT 's DNA both from a content and digital delivery perspective. We are also focused on opening up innovation processes to collaborate within RT , as well as with audiences, digital technology companies like Google and the startup community to co-create our future. Plans are underway to open an Innovation Lab at RT to facilitate this open collaboration.

The Digital Champions' brought huge energy to the day as a group of smart, engaged digital natives their unique perspective and digital expectations from a media organisation were refreshing. added M irne Laffan.

Colin Goulding, Startups and Education at Google Ireland, said Through our education programmes like Call to Code, Expeditions and Doodle for Google, we want to engage students with technology and computer science.With Expeditions, teachers can take their classes on immersive virtual journeys to bring their lessons to life and take their classes to places most people will never go, from Mars to Mount Everest.
