Open IPTV Forum publishes HTML5 profile for Connected TVs 05 Jun 2013
The Open IPTV Forum (OIPF) has published a profile of HTML5, CSS, DOM3 and other related web technologies aimed at connected TV services and devices that implement a browser-based application environment. It describes a common profile based on the latest, stable web technologies defined by the W3C that are expected to be implemented by connected TV manufacturers and can be relied on by application developers, and content and service providers for the creation of rich HTML5 applications. The profile avoids extensions or modifications to any of the referenced W3C technologies, but defines a subset of those specifications that have achieved a high degree of stability. The functionality chosen is specifically targeted to support interoperability between entertainment services and connected TVs.
Jon Piesing of TP Vision, the technical lead of the group that created this specification, says: Web standards have moved on since the first version of our specification was published in 2009. This work represents a broad update of our browser specification to be based on the new generation of Web specifications, not just HTML5 but also CSS3, DOM3 and a variety of other related technologies. This update should enable apps and services for connected TVs to be developed relying on the presence of a coherent and consistent set of up-to-date technologies. It should make it easier to re-use tools and libraries developed for the web when developing for connected TVs.
Nilo Mitra, President of the Open IPTV Forum, adds: The browser is becoming the industry accepted platform for multi-screen media consumption, and HTML5 has been endorsed by the global technical community as the basis for interoperable services on connected devices. It was therefore important for the Open IPTV Forum to ensure that retail connected TVs and STBs, which have been the main focus of the OIPF since its founding, take advantage of HTML5 and the latest web technologies.
The specification can be downloaded at http://www.oipf.tv/specifications

Notes for editors:
The Open IPTV Forum enables and accelerates creation of a mass market for IPTV by defining and publishing freely available standards-based specifications for end-end IPTV services of the future.

Members of the Open IPTV Forum are working together on the development of open specifications because they recognise that combining the expertise of all parties involved will help to streamline and accelerate deployments of IPTV technologies. Their aim is to make the next generation of IPTV a mass-market service and to maximise the benefits of IPTV and Connected TVs for consumers as well as the industry.
As a collaborative industry body, the OIPF has incorporated existing standards into the Forum's specifications for IP and Connected TV wherever possible, defining how these standards should be joined together in a way that provides global consistency whilst enabling regional variations. The OIPF specifications are also being adopted by complementary groups including HbbTV - the regional standard that has been agreed by European broadcasters for Hybrid TV solutions. HbbTV has incorporated, and is based upon, the OIPF Specifications originally created by the Open IPTV Forum.
A forthcoming device certification and IOT program will see the OIPF logo appearing on numerous services and devices, aiding consumers, service providers and manufacturers as new technologies are delivered to retail, end user living rooms and across multiple mobile screens on a global basis.
Potential new members are welcomed across the communications and entertainment industries, including network operators, content providers, service providers, consumer electronics manufacturers and home and network infrastructure providers.
In 2012 a reduced membership fee was introduced to encourage participation from smaller, innovative businesses and application developers who want to work with CE device vendors to agree common standards for enriched entertainment see www.oipf.tv or email contact@oipf.tv for more information.
