Power Outage Doesn't Dim Super Bowl XLVII Ratings
by Ken Kerschbaumer
Super Bowl XLVII is in the books, complete with ratings that make it the highest-rated Super Bowl in metered markets in history (48.1 household rating/71 share, edging Super Bowl XLV between Green Bay and Pittsburgh, which clocked in at 47.9/71), plenty of drama, and, of course, a power outage at New Orleans' Mercedes-Benz Superdome that is still a bit of a mystery. The outage caused CBS Sports to lose audio to the broadcast booth and to a number of cameras although generator power on the studio set and in the broadcast compound prevented the network's coverage from going off-air.
CBS Sports Coverage of Super Bowl XLVII Innovates
by Ken Kerschbaumer
Months of preparation by CBS Sports, and a wide variety of partners, comes together for the broadcast of Super Bowl XLVII from the Mercedes Benz Superdome. Among the technical highlights? A new look for CBS Sports graphic animations and inserts, the expanded use of Heyeperzoom, and the use of Evertz Mosaic. But the biggest accomplishment was simply the collective effort by hundreds of CBS Sports staffers, freelancers, and technology partners.
NFL Network Shows Flexibility via Game Creek Video, NEP Superbee
by Ken Kerschbaumer
It was a busy week for Rod Conti, NFL Network, director of remote studio operations, and the rest of the staff at the network. And for good reason as the network broadcasted more than 190 broadcast hours across multiple platforms during the past week and operated from multiple stages throughout the city.
Bexel Broadcast Delivers for CBS, ESPN, Turner, and NFL Films at Super Bowl
by Ken Kerschbaumer
Bexel Broadcast Services has spent Super Bowl week servicing four top clients as CBS Sports, ESPN, Turner Sports, and NFL Films all made use of the company's rental and fiber services. CBS Sports relied heavily on Bexel for both fiber support at Jackson Square as well as a wide variety of gear at the Mercedes Benz Superdome broadcast compound.
Super Bowl XLVII Photo Gallery, Part Two: Set Up and the Big Game
Super Bowl XLVII got underway Sunday night, albeit with a bit of darkness thrown in courtesy of a power outage that knocked out half the power in the stadium for 36 minutes. The broadcast compound was spared thanks to back up generators supplied by Aggreko. SVG was on hand in New Orleans, taking you behind-the-scenes to see all of the facilities, tech toys, and innovations.
Kernwer Set Technology Gets Super Revamp in New Orleans
by Ken Kerschbaumer
Three years ago Patrick Santini's Northern Lights Productions helped CBS Sports get its pre-game set down on the field at the Super Bowl in Miami and, more importantly, quickly lower and raise its stage to prevent unnecessary seat kills. Since then Northern Lights Production has been renamed Kernwer but it is still delivering the goods for those on the hunt for innovative set constuction and tools. This year, for example, Kernwer was involved with nine sets, including the CBS Sports set within the Superdome and NFL Networks sets within the Superdome, at the NFL Experience, and at the gazebo.
Turner, CNN Tap Bexel for Bleacher Report Premiere
by Ken Kerschbaumer
Finding a hotel room for a Super Bowl three weeks before the game can be challenging enough, but Turner Sports and CNN upped the ante when they needed a suitable location for the launch of Bleacher Report, CNN's latest sports-news venture. Bexel provided its LPU (lightweight production unit) system to handle the video and audio needs. The set went live on Saturday afternoon from a location near the Harrah's hotel and casino.
NEP Taps Sony Cameras for NFL's Big Day
Sony HD cameras were used by NEP Broadcasting, the production facilities provider supporting the broadcast of the NFL championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. NEP Broadcasting provided several trailers for pre- and post-game, main game and the half-time show. The Sony cameras used by NEP for the main CBS broadcast in the United States included nearly 30 HDC-1500 and HDC-2500 multi-format cameras, which were positioned throughout the stadium.
