For the fourth year in Cape Town, shnit launches the Real Time Competition, Tuesday October 7. Three home grown filmmakers drawn from the city's most exciting young talent are invited to take part, each tasked with producing a 5 minute short film over the course of the festival week, in partnership with some of Cape Town's premiere industry facilities.
All three films are filmed with the same equipment and a script written from the same inspiration point, each year rooted in South African mythology, culture or history. Each has just one day to film, one day to edit, and one day for sound design and mix, visual effects and colouring. Script to screen in 72 hours. Ten previous Real Time films have been produced over three years, many of which have gone on to further international festivals and awards.
Kyle Lewis, Kofi Zwana and Jolynn Minnaar will compete in friendly fashion this year, working from the inspiration point Home - the Sarah Baartman story'. The films will premiere at shnit's Awards Night, Sunday 12 October at the Labia Theatre, where the audience chooses the winning film, live and in Real Time. Additional highlights of the night include the awarding of the Made in South Africa awards. Both an audience award and the coveted jury prize, selected by a panel comprising of Jenna Bass, Jahmil XT Qubeka and Terence Neale, and headed by Gavin Hood, will be presented.
Shnit kicks off Wednesday 8 October with typical pizzazz and will screen at the Labia Theatre, Cape Town, and Pulp Cinema Stellenbosch all weekend, with additional highlight screenings at Cinemuse and Short & Sweet Cinema Club.
See www.shnit.org for ticketing info and full line up of five blocks of South African films, 14 blocks of international films, and a number of bright nights. Filmmakers in attendance at all South African screenings.
Real Time is made possible by our partners Zootee Studios, Sound Surgeon Studios, Searle Street Post Production, Annie's Wardrobe and Sitewise. Prizes awarded by Exposure Gallery & Lenbaby. shnit is made possible through the funding support of the National Film and Video Foundation and the Cape Film Commission, and the cooperative support of a number of generous partners and venues.
REAL TIME THEME 2014: HOME
I've come to take you home - home, remember the veld? (Dianna Ferrus, A poem for Sarah Baartman)
Sarah Baartman was uprooted from her home, shipped overseas and then paraded around London and Paris as a freak, La Belle Hottentot'. She died at 25 in a hostile and strange world, thousands of kilometers away from everything that she knew, with no means of ever finding her way home again. In 1994 Nelson Mandela requested that Sarah Baartman's remains be returned to South Africa. Finally, in 2002, her remains were returned home, where she was finally laid to rest in the area of her birth, the Gamtoos River Valley in the Eastern Cape, 187 years after she left Cape Town for London. Sarah Baartman was finally home. The theme for Shnit Realtime 2014 is Home'. Sarah Baartman's story doesn't need to be interpreted literally, this is simply inspiration for the idea of Home' and the ideals associated with it.
