NOA Provides Audio Migration Technology for Indiana Universitys Media Preservation Initiative

NOA technology has been installed at the heart of one of the largest cultural and academic archiving projects in the USA - the Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative (MDPI) at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. More than half a million objects identified by experts as historically significant and valuable for research are held in obsolescent formats in rapidly deteriorating condition.

Over the next five years these assets will be gathered from the Bloomington campus, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and other IU locations and digitised to future-proof file-based storage in a project managed for IU by Memnon Archiving Services.

MDPI will use a high-performance NOA installation comprising two 4-channel NOA Record system, as well as one 8channel MediaLector system, as well as the migration planning tool jobDB, the transcoder MediaButler and DBScripter for various scripting tasks for archiving IU's audio assets. The NOA installation is integrated with Memnon's own media management system.

Memnon which has been recently acquired by SONY, is one of the foremost providers of specialist asset preservation services, has been a long-standing user of NOA technology in high profile large-scale archiving projects at its European headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.

MDPI is an example of timely action by an institution with a valuable and endangered library of assets to preserve, said Christophe Kummer, NOA's CEO. For others, time is running out, since experts estimate that in ten years it will be almost impossible for material on obsolete formats to be transferred. The scale of the problem around the world is such that other institutions and organisations with important assets should act now, before further deterioration of the libraries, and while obsolescent machines are still operational.

The MDPI project will make its assets available through the Indiana University Media Preservation and Access Center in partnership with IU libraries in time for IU's bicentennial celebrations in January 2020.
