SCOUT Location Public Workshop a Huge Success

The Durban Film Office's exciting initiative SCOUT, the first location scouting mentorship and development programme, began with a riveting one-day workshop that took place on the 9th of October 2014, at the picturesque Botanic Gardens.

The Durban Film Office, the eThekwini Municipality's film industry development arm, has created a new location scouting mentorship and development programme known as SCOUT dedicated to young and previously disadvantaged local filmmakers.

This exciting new initiative began with a one-day public workshop, aimed exposing filmmakers to the art of location scouting and introduce to opportunities in the sector.

The workshop was well organized. I learnt a lot of techniques, skills and I now understand rules when I arrive in a location governed by a king or Municipality. I know now what to include when preparing for location scouting. This was an amazing opportunity, way beyond my expectations and I'm very glad that I was able to attend it, says one of the workshop attendees, Siphamandla Ngcobo.

Taking this enlightening day of activities to the next level, Neville Botha, a location scouting film expert, facilitated the workshop. This workshop served as an introduction to the overall programme, exposing filmmakers to the location opportunities that exist and educated them on what is expected in the business of location scouting; covering a variety of topic topics like the art of taking pictures, scope of the work, different working conditions and the type of risks involved.

The response from those that attended was overwhelming, attendees ranged from students to independent filmmakers and they all showed a keen interest in location scouting, says Scout Location professional Neville Botha.

We are pleased with the response from the workshop of this first phase of SCOUT. It is important to develop and nurture young talent in the field of location scouting with skill transfer training and support dedicated to local talent development, says Durban Film Office's Toni Monty.

The Durban Film Office encourages those who attended the one-day workshop and those who are interested in further developing their skills in location scouting to take the next step and fill out the application form.
